US conducts counter-terrorism operation in Syria: NPR
The US has launched a counter-terrorism operation in northern Syria, according to a statement from the Pentagon released early Thursday.
“US Special Operations forces under the control of US Central Command conducted a counterterrorism mission this evening in northwestern Syria,” the statement read. “Mission successful. No American casualties.”
The attack took place in Idlib, northwest Syria, near the border with Turkey. This is also the province in which the United States has conducted beat killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that at least nine civilians were killed in the raid. NPR cannot independently verify the number.
Videotapes went viral online appearing to show the battle, with heavy rapid gunfire.
The Pentagon said it would provide more information as it becomes available.
