UN highlights ‘invisible’ value of groundwater during World Water Week |

Follow United Nations World Water Development Report 2022Groundwater makes up 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth. However, this natural resource is poorly understood and therefore undervalued and mismanaged.

Noting that the demand for water is increasing, Mr. Houngbo, who is also the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), highlighting the urgent need for policymakers to understand the critical role groundwater plays and to better manage the competitive demands of water and sanitation, agricultural, industrial, and ecology and adaptation to climate change.

World Water Week 2022 – taking place in Stockholm, Sweden, from 23 August to 1 September – features many discussions, both online and in person, with the theme: “Seeing the unseen. : The Value of Water”.

The Groundwater Discussion session, which also includes presentations from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and others, among a number activities UN-Water is co-organizing to highlight the connection between the Sustainable development goals 6 (water and sanitation) and other Goal.

Decade of action

These considerations are expected to help bring the return home agenda to the fore United Nations Water Summit on Groundwater in Paris in December and United Nations Water Conference in New York in March 2023, officially known as the 2023 Midterm Comprehensive Review Conference on the Implementation of the United Nations Decade of Action on Water and Sanitation (2018-2028).

The main objective of the Conference is to raise awareness of the global water crisis and to decide on a coordinated action to achieve internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including target in 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
