Ukraine may lose the war, but Russia cannot win at the geopolitical level, Ian Bremmer, political scientist and president of the Eurasia Group, told CNBC.
“Ukraine can lose this war,” Bremmer told CNBC’s Hadley Gamble at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, but Russia can’t win in NATO because “lower” statusBremmer said.
“[Russia] will still be cut NATO will still expand and for Putin, feeling humiliated, insecure and in a far worse geostrategic position than he was before being invaded, what would he do as the most powerful rogue nation world? It’s a long-term question that goes beyond Ukraine,” Bremmer added.
Bremmer says NATO’s support for Ukraine is “extraordinary” and “far beyond what people thought was possible,” with Germany reduce dependence on Russian energy supply and the United States leads in send supplies to Ukraine. But he questions whether this support will continue.
“Will that be true in 2024, with the presidential elections coming up?” he asks. “We don’t know what will happen there.”
Bremmer noted that it remains to be seen whether Ukraine continues to receive ” attention and engagement” from the West in the first year after the Russian invasion.
“The answer is Ukraine can lose. People here need to understand that Ukraine can lose this war,” Bremmer said.
So far, the UK, the US and Germany are among the countries with agreed to equip Ukraine with tanksbut they have not yet fulfilled the request of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy Most recent request for fighter.
“[The war] It’s an existential crisis for Ukraine, it’s an existential crisis for Zelenskyy personally and his family – they are literally fighting for their lives,” Bremmer said.
