University of Georgia football player Devin Willock and a team member died in a car crash early Sunday morning, just hours after the team celebrated its second consecutive anniversary. national champion.

Willock, 20, and recruitment analyst Chandler LeCroy, 24, were killed in the collision and two other members of the university’s football program were injured, the school announced.

“Devin is an outstanding young man in every way. He is always smiling, a great teammate and a joy to coach. Chandler is a valued member of the football staff of the club. us and brings an incredible attitude and energy every day,” University of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart said in a statement.

“We extend our condolences to their family for this tragic loss and will support them in any way we can,” Smart added.

University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead said the entire campus is mourning Willock and LeCroy.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends. We also pray for the full recovery of those injured in this tragic accident,” Morehead said.

The Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release that officers responded to a single-vehicle collision around 2:45 a.m. Initial information shows that a 2021 Ford Expedition has left the road and crashed into two power poles and some trees. Police said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Investigators said Willock died at the scene, while LeCroy, who was driving, was taken to a local hospital and died of his injuries.

Police said a 21-year-old male passenger suffered minor injuries and a 26-year-old female passenger was seriously injured. The University of Georgia said Sunday that both passengers who survived were in stable condition.

Originally from New Milford, NJ, Willock was an offensive lineman for the Bulldogs listed as a “red-shirt sophomore” on the team’s website.

Praises for Willock and LeCroy abound on social media Sunday, including from current University of Georgia football players.

“Shouldn’t have been like this man,” said Kearis Jackson, Bulldogs generous recipient said in a tweet“love you both forever.”
