Two-time Pegasus Turf winner Colonel Liam retired
Lawana and Robert Low Colonel Liam’attempt to win a third consecutive Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (G1T) was derailed on January 19 when coach Todd Pletcher said his 6-year-old son Map of Liam retired with plans for his stallion career to be announced later.
The $1.8 million+ earner is trying to add another Pegasus Turf win to his career record of seven wins from 12 starts, including three tier 1 wins, highlighted by wins consecutively in the 2022 and 2021 editions of the January 28 grass stake $1 million prize at Gulfstream Park. He was among 12 invited to the race after finishing sixth in the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2T) at Gulfstream Park during their first game since finishing ninth overseas at Dubai Turf (G1) March 26.
Colonel Liam’s defection will allow one of the horses on the reserve list of Pegasus Turf candidates to enter the field for the 1 1/8 mile stake.
The draws for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at 1 1/8 mile, Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf Invitational (G3T) at 1 1/16 mile, and Pegasus Turf will be held. on January 22nd.
As the winner of his career debut in 3rd place on dirt road by disqualification, Colonel Liam also won the bets in Turf Classic (G1T) at Churchill Downs and Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes (G2T) in 2021 and the Tropical Park Derby in 2020.
