Two people were shot and one died after graduating from high school

According to CNN. The New Orleans Police Department responded to a call for shots to be fired in the Xavier Convocation Center parking lot at around 11:45 a.m. Deputy Superintendent Christopher Goodly warned reporters: Looks like a fight broke out between the two women. After this altercation, the subjects produced weapons and opened fire.”

Authorities arrested several people in connection with the shooting. Several firearms were also recovered from the scene, however, no formal arrests have been made. In a statement, Patricia Perkins, head of Morris Jeff School, said today should have been an anniversary for seniors.

“Morris Jeff is a strong school community, and we will unite to help each other heal. Every day, we teach our children to resolve their differences with words and compassion for one another,” said Patricia. “Our graduates will make a difference in this world because they learn to see each other as equals. This determination is only stronger after today’s violence.”

Unfortunately, Morris Jeff High School’s graduation is not the only one that ends with gunfire. WDSU reported on May 20, nearly an hour away in Hammond, LA, that 20-year-old Trent Thomas was arrested for shooting and wounding four people during a graduation ceremony on the campus of Southeast University by Hammond High Magnet School.

Authorities say the shooting may have stemmed from an altercation between Trent and a minor. In addition, they also believe it may be due to gang affiliation. Our thoughts are with those affected by today’s tragedy in New Orleans.
