Two arrested after man dies after being sucked into sinkhole in swimming pool during party | World News
Two people have been arrested in Israel after a man died in a sinkhole at a swimming pool.
The man named in Israeli news reports as Klil Kimhi, 32, was in the swimming pool when the sinkhole opened and he was sucked into a 13-meter-deep cave.
He was at a villa in the town of Karmei Yosef, about 25 miles west of Jerusalem, attending a party with colleagues in his marketing firm.
It took four hours for rescuers to reach him – they had to work carefully for fear of multiple sinkholes – but he was already dead.
Police said Friday that a man and woman in their 60s are suspected of causing death by negligence.
They appeared in court and were released under “limited house arrest” for five days.
Witnesses told Israeli media that there were almost 50 people at the party and six were in the pool.
It has also been suggested that the owner of the villa built the swimming pool without the proper permits.
Video from the scene shows pool water being sucked into a giant hole, as partygoers try to grab objects to prevent themselves from being dragged in.
The tarps in the pool got swept into the pit and disappeared.
Nurse Uri Damari told the Jerusalem Post: “This is a very unusual incident.
“When I arrived at the scene I saw a hole opened in the bottom of the empty chasm.
“Those who were on the scene told me the pit opened suddenly and within seconds all the water of the pool was pulled in.”
A 34-year-old man was also sucked into the pit but escaped with minor injuries to his head and extremities.
