Tropical Storm Fiona is forecast to move over the easternmost Caribbean islands Friday night before slowing to a point just south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico late Saturday and Sunday, Central US National Hurricane said.
Friday’s forecast raised the total estimated rainfall for the affected islands, to 30 centimeters in parts of eastern and southern Puerto Rico and 16 inches (41 centimeters) east of the Dominican Republic. Such heavy rainfall can cause flash floods and landslides in higher elevations, with coastal flooding and life-threatening surf when Fiona winds blow ashore, the center said.
The center said the sixth storm in the Atlantic Hurricane Season was maintaining maximum winds of about 50 mph (85 km/h) when a Hunter Hurricane Reserve aircraft measured its progress into Friday morning, the center said. The forecast is for a slight change in strength over the next few days.
At 8 a.m. EDT on Friday, Fiona was traveling at 15 mph (24 km/h), about 175 miles (285 km) east of Guadeloupe. A tropical storm warning has been in effect for the Leeward Islands and a tropical storm warning has been issued for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Dominica.
