Rayne is a small town of just over 7,300 residents in Louisiana. One The interstate, I-10, serves Rayne with a single exit near the northern boundary of the town. Late Thursday morning, someone was driving a tractor-trailer get off the embankment near the exit.
The short video of the incident started the suspected tractor-trailer over the embankment. Then, the truck plowed down the end of a four-lane roadway through the interstate. The pickup crossed the boulevard without hitting another vehicle and left behind a pile of dirt and smoke after it took off. The tractor-trailer fell off the frame and into a private area, where the pickup caught fire.
The Rayne Volunteer Fire Department, based less than a quarter of a mile from the scene, responded to the collision and extinguished the fire. The driver suffered minor injuries during an unplanned excursion. The Rayne Police Department, based at the same location as volunteer firefighters, is investigating the incident.
Interstate-10 in the Southeast has looked more dangerous than usual lately. Early this morning, there is another incident on the other side of the state line in Mississippi. There, a passenger van crashed into a camper. The truck’s driver was seriously injured and the interstate had to be closed to allow a medical helicopter to pick up the driver.
In January, a truck carrying seven new BMWs crashed into a bridge on I-10. The BMWs caught fire and the wreckage damaged the bridge. It took more than nine hours for the bridge to be cleared to traffic, re-checked for visitor safety and reopened traffic. While the bridge is reopened, the damage to the bridge will not be repaired until April.
If I were a local resident, I would hope that Interstate-10 could have a quiet, trouble-free month.
