Tons of dead fish pulled from the Oder River in Poland as officials warn of possible pollution | World News

At least 10 tons of dead fish have been pulled out of the Oder River that flows along part of Poland’s border with Germany – as officials warn people not to enter the water due to possible contamination.

The head of Poland’s national maritime agency said anglers and volunteers had retrieved dead fish from a 200-kilometer (124-mile) stretch of river north of Olawa, southwestern Poland.

Przemyslaw Daca, head of State Water Holding, also called the situation a colossal ecological disaster.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki vowed to punish those responsible after environmental regulators said they had informed prosecutors of the possibility of polluting the country’s second longest river. this.

Ewa Drewniak, a biologist working with the opposition political group Civic Coalition, accused the government of not reacting quickly enough.

“Dead fish has been flowing in the Oder for the past two weeks and people have not been informed about it, I have seen a lot of people bathing in the river a week and a half ago, they are not aware of the danger, this is scandalous. ,” she said.

Regional environmental protection authorities in the Polish city of Wroclaw said Oder water samples taken on July 28 showed an 80% probability that they contained mesitylene, a toxic, albeit toxic substance. This was not present in water samples taken after August 1.

Mr Daca said low river levels due to drought in Europe could exacerbate possible pollution.

He added that they suspect a strong oxidant may have soaked into the water causing the oxygen levels to spike, which could be harmful to the fish.

Mr Daca also said there was no reason to panic and the situation was improving.

Several German counties bordering Poland have warned locals to avoid river water and not eat fish from the Oder until the cause of death is unclear.

“The reports from Oder are simply terrible,” Michael Kellner, a senior politician with Germany’s The Greens party, said on Twitter.
