Titans, Nashville access deal for dome stadium, $2.2 billion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Titans has an agreement with Nashville Mayor John Cooper to build a new stadium according to an Axios report.

The 1.7 million square foot stadium will have a dome that can host the Super Bowl and other major events year-round. It will be located east of Nissan Stadium along the East Coast.

The project is said to cost up to $2.2 billion and must be approved by the Metro Council.

Ownership of Titans is said to have agreed to shell out $800 million to help fund the project. The stadium will also be funded by a $500 million state investment.

Other funding includes a 1% tax on local hotel room rentals in Davidson County along with sales tax collected in the new stadium.

This deal is the result of Nissan Stadium needing renovation after 23 years of wear and tear. A provision in the existing lease requires that the condition of the stadium be kept on par with other sports venues built at the same time.

That project will cost about $1.8 billion over the next 17 years. Cooper called renovating Nissan Stadium rather than building a new facility “financially irresponsible,” which advocates say will attract more tourists year-round. But the Nashville Metro Council is said to have been reluctant to approve larger spending on tourism projects. The new stadium will represent the largest construction project in Metro history.
