Tiger Woods Exceeded Expectations at the Masters, Plus Opening Day Surprises

WOOD TIGER

Tiger Woods is back, and he wasted no time letting everyone know. Playing his first round of competitive golf in almost a year and a half, Woods fired an opening half under 71 in masters and is the leader’s four shots back Sungjae Im (more on him in a bit).

Of course, the results aren’t much more important than the fact that Tiger is playing at all, but the results are impressive nonetheless:

• Three birdies, two bogeys, 13 pars
• Hit nine of the 18 greens in the rules
• Hit eight out of 14 passes

Woods’ controller was inconsistent at best, but for the most part, he was able to get himself out of trouble with some crafty irons and wedges and important putts. In his strong opening round, Woods proved two thingsour golf expert Kyle Porter writes.

• Porters: “He can get through and start competing at this tournament. … Tiger can and will beat enough of this field over 36 holes to make a glimmer of hope on Saturday morning. … He proving something more meaningful than what he’s been proving every year since he won the tournament 25 years ago.
