Tiger Woods beats Rory McIlroy in race to win $15 million prize from PGA Tour Player Impact Program

Tiger Woods winning a golf competition in 2022 would be a remarkable idea at the start of the year, but he’ll have to try for a bold win off the court. Woods placed first in the PGA Tour’s Player Impact Program for the second year in a row, this time right in front of his friend and business partner, Rory McIlroy.

Woods will take home $15 million for the achievement while McIlroy takes home $12 million. Right behind them in the rankings are another pair of close friends Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas as the undefeated Presidents Cup duo finished third and fourth, respectively, with Jon Rahm breaking into the top five. The top four are scheduled to compete in The Match VII on December 10 in a 12-hole exhibit to aid relief efforts for Hurricane Ian.

Woods took first place last year even though he didn’t play a competitive round of golf on the PGA Tour. That first place was worth $10 million; This year’s prize pool is slightly higher at $15 million, as the overall amount for the PIP has been increased from $40 million in 2021 to $100 million in 2022, according to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in earlier this year at the Tour Championship.

Woods only played a total of nine rounds in 2022 and placed 41st in Nielsen Brand Exposure, which essentially measures the amount of TV time a player receives during weekend news coverage. Woods was able to remedy this shortcoming by topping out four other categories.

Criteria for scoring PIP in 2022

  • Google: Google search data
  • melt water: Mentions in the media
  • Nielsen: Exposure on weekend television
  • Q Score: Public awareness
  • MVP Index: Social media engagement and outreach

Tour has increased its prize pool this year and through to 2023. Not only has it raised PIP funds from $40 million to $100 million, but it has also expanded the pool of recipients from 10 to 20, increasing a number of PGA Tour wallets to $20 million and continues to invest in the FedEx Cup prize fund (which went from $15 million a year ago to $18 million this year).

This is welcome news for two-time big winner Collin Morikawa. The last man to leave in 2021, Morikawa remains in 11th place in the rankings, but unlike last year, will be rewarded with up to $3 million. Social media guru Max Homa, fan-favorite Rickie Fowler and avid Australian fan Adam Scott all score in the 11-20 range on the leaderboard.

What’s new in 2023?

Matsuyama, Young and Burns may not have made the top 20 in the 2022 PIP, but the PGA Tour went ahead and wrote them a check. All three would be in the magic number if the new criteria were applied, which limits the social media aspect of the scoring. The MVP and Q Score will be replaced by the MARC Golf Fan Perception and the MARC General Population Perception. These two new categories will be an easier way to measure player popularity among adults and golf fans.

Why is PIP important?

In addition to the PGA Tour top player cashflow, PIP will be used as the primary identifier in the future. The top 20 players in this year’s PIP are expected to compete on the Tour’s new enhanced schedule in 2023, including 13 amateurs with huge prize money and ostensibly all top players. Top of the world.

This flood of cash was created against LIV Golf and players who left the PGA Tour for a substantial raise. Interestingly, one of the LIV participants actually had one of the best Tiger and PIP things I’ve ever seen. Pat Perez spoke about it at the Genesis Invitational in February when he was still part of the PGA Tour.

“It was a joke, but like I said, the PIP program is a joke,” Perez said. “Give Tiger 40 [million] and say we owe you another zero. They owe Tiger $400, $500 million easily. There should be no program. Here’s yours, here’s 50, thanks for the awesome, here’s what we owe you for giving us hundreds of millions of dollars. People like me, you know, to be able to make a few million dollars a year is unbelievable and it’s only thanks to him. Just for him, you know. So like I said, I’m a good fit for Tiger. But if Phil is pushing for more money for our tour and fighting for it, that’d be great, but he seems to be on the side of Saudi Arabia so it’s hard to believe he’s actually being fight for it.”
