This MSCHF Quiz — and $2 Million Chance to Win — Brought My Family Closer

Without a specific reference image or a single contextual clue, all progress is exploratory. Should this red corner be front or back? Will the next piece in this row be horizontal or vertical? Does this piece really belong here or is it just fitting? It was a stab in the dark. Each piece is a needle in a haystack without meaning.

The MSCHF says that even if some pieces are missing or aren’t put together exactly as they should be, the big picture QR code will still work. At this point, I’m not 100 percent sure not at all of the pieces is where they should be. Not even the edges. I wish I was joking. But solving this puzzle has become a matter of pride, and I am motivated by defiance as well as the ability to win.

Luckily, I had support—at least 10 family members, my best friend, my partner, an aggressive Boston terrier, and varying degrees of determination. It became a ritual bonding experience for myself and loved ones worth over $1, $30 or $2,000,000. Call it Stockholm syndrome, but this puzzle is one of my favorites that I’ve bought all year. As of publication, we are about to solve the first half of the puzzle. The sweepstakes end in February 2024. I would be lying if I said I’m not interested in completing it on time.

Big picture

This puzzle can be frustrating, but not impossible. Others have solved it. We can solve it. Many motivational talks were made. My mother has said many times: “We must be smarter than the puzzle.” We’re smarter than the puzzle, aren’t we?

Quickly after unboxing, the puzzle took a proud place in the center of my parents’ living room. I’ll visit and ponder for a while, putting a piece or two in place. The kids would come out of their bedroom to grab a snack and try to fill in the missing piece. Small talk led to hours of chatting around the table, staring at the blue sea with little black dots, trying to figure out how the pieces fit together. I call my 9-year-old sister a psycho—what kind of person can put three pieces together without an edge? My mother scoffed at me – what kind of person would move from place to place instead of properly building? (Note: She didn’t ask what kind of person would call a child a psychopath.)

We laugh about what we’re going to buy with our winnings, although “winning” in this context is defined as jumping for joy when we finally tackle a corner. . I said I would buy my dream lake house; my brother said that he would buy my dream lake house and invite everyone else over. We curse hereditary myopia and poor overhead light. We checked the clock and saw it was 3 a.m. and swore we’d just work on it a little longer.

This quiz was given to my family something to do with our hands and minds in a particularly difficult chapter of our lives. While maintaining vigilance for the last few days of my terminally ill grandmother, she was unable to answer, but the nurses said she could still hear us. Movies look easy, but in reality, filling the silence of a room for days is difficult. There are only so many stories that you can share, feelings that you can convey, or passages that you can read. We didn’t know what to do or say.
