‘There is no more respect’ as ambulances are attacked in South Africa



Paramedic Papinki Lebelo waits for a police escort before responding to an emergency call in the Red Zone of Philippi East in Cape Town, South Africa.  Due to an increase in attacks on medical workers, much of the city is accessible to ambulance crews only when they have a police escort.  This seriously delays response times.

That’s what one paramedic said about targeting ambulance crews. Criminals are after phones and wallets along with medical equipment and drugs. We traveled with the Cape Town crew in the Red Zone.
