In a local store, someone came across a skinny and trembling dog, curled up silently, asking for nothing. Even though he had a shopping list, this person was still moved by this scene and added chicken feet to his basket. After buying the chicken, they approached the dog and lured it to the back of the store to invite them to eat. When the dog started eating, an unexpected confrontation took place. Suddenly, the sounds of growling and a woman’s scream pierced the air. Turning back, this person was shocked to see a 70-year-old woman snatching the chicken leg from the dog’s hand.
Running over, this person questioned the old woman’s actions and received a loud rebuke: ‘What is going on? People can’t buy meat and she’s feeding the dogs!’ Undeterred, the person replied: “I bought this with my own money and can give it to anyone I want. If you care so much about the hungry, sell your gold ring and buy them food and put the legs back, I bought them for the dog.” This exchange escalated when the grandmother hurled a series of insults, leaving the grandmother frustrated by the encounter. Those listening applauded the man for his courageous response.
This incident was eye-opening, revealing a harsh reality about the capacity of others to be malicious. It is difficult to understand how someone could begrudge a small act of kindness towards a helpless animal, especially an animal without a home or anyone to care for it. Criticism of those who help homeless animals appears to be unfounded, especially in a society where such animals are often seen as a threat and sometimes encourage cruelty. for those who cannot defend themselves.
This painful interaction leaves lingering questions about human nature: Why is an innocent dog, once a friend, now considered an enemy by some? Why is it acceptable to demonize vulnerable people? These questions remain unanswered, highlighting a worrying aspect of societal attitudes towards compassion and vulnerability.
