And this is just the beginning, says McGuire, professor emeritus of climate hazards and geophysics at University College London. As he makes clear in his uncompromising description of the coming climate disaster, we – for too long – ignore the stark warnings that rising carbon emissions are dangerously warming the Earth. . We will now pay the price of our complacency in the form of hurricanes, floods, droughts and heatwaves that will easily overcome the current extremes.
The bottom line, he argues, is that there is currently no chance of us avoiding a pervasive, dangerous climate disruption. We are past the point of no return and can look forward to a future in which deadly heat waves and temperatures in excess of 50C (120F) are common in the tropics; where summers in temperate latitudes are always hot, and where our oceans are intended to become warm and acidic. “A child born in 2020 will face a world much more hostile than its grandparents,” notes McGuire.
In this regard, the volcanologist, who is also a member of the UK government’s Working Group on Natural Hazards, has an extreme view. Most other climate experts still think we have time, though not very much, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a meaningful way. They say the momentum is so rapid that it’s not static and that stopping global warming is still within our grasp.
Such claims have been refuted by McGuire. “I know many people who work in climate science who say one thing in public but say a very different thing in private. With confidence, they’re all much more fearful of the future we face, but they won’t admit it in public. I call this climate relief and I believe it only makes things worse. The world needs to know how bad things are going to get before we can hope to start addressing the crisis. “

I have to admire Bill McGuire’s climate propaganda innovation – he tackles the issue of elevation beyond a certain doom.
This is a real challenge for trees, how do you make climate change seem even scarier than “near certain doom, but we have some hope”? Bills’ solution is, we are certainly doomed, but we need to work to avoid that doom, even though doom is inevitable.
