the warmest and coolest places in winter in the Northwest
Several people asked me about the severe winter weather in the area, so I decided to do a podcast about it (see below).
As shown in the map of January average minimum temperatures below (from my book), the coolest temperatures are found east of the Cascades, where marine influence is limited by That mountain fence. The warmest temperatures are along the coast, where the relatively warm Pacific Ocean keeps things just right.
Look closely and you’ll find the warmest temperatures are on the southern Oregon coast from Brookings to Coos Bay. Northwest Belt Banana. As explained in the podcast, the high terrain around Medford plays an important role in this warmth.
And then I touch on the issue of the coldest places in our region, with Washington’s record in the upper Methow River valley, where cold air sweeps over the towns of Winthrop and Mazama. And much more….
