“The waiting time is over. It’s game time. Errol Spence. Terence Crawford. July 29, Las Vegas, Nevada. Everyone come out and support and watch me fry this fish.”

WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford said so in an Instagram video posted Thursday. In other words, it’s official – Crawford will finally face WBC, WBA and IBF Welding Champion Errol Spence for the undisputed world welterweight championship. It took a long time – too long, truth be told. However, now that the match has become a reality, there is plenty for fans to celebrate.

The truth is that both Crawford and Spence are considered two of the best boxers on the planet. Both men were undefeated and, with the exception of the essentially retired Keith Thurman, beat all of their peers. With a new and younger generation of opponents about to emerge, this fight was clearly done in the eleventh hour. Still, it’s good to see these two finally work things out in the ring. Indeed, this has made for a great first half of 2023 for the sport of boxing.

Last month, Gervonta Davis defeated the famous Ryan Garcia in a pay-per-view super fight. Then, just last week, the super-talented Devin Haney topped (albeit controversially) the great Vasly Lomachneko in a stunning battle of high skills and high octane. And now, finally, to Crawford-Spence. If Tyson Fury somehow gets into the ring with Oleksandr Usyk to claim the undisputed heavyweight championship in 2023, a very good year for boxing will suddenly turn into a great year.

Indeed, 2023 could turn out to be a great year even without Fury and Usyk going head-to-head in the ring. Great wars are being waged. relevant ones. popular ones. There’s a lot of exciting things going on in the sport right now. At the top of Crawford-Spence, for example, the extraordinary Naoya Inoue would answer the bell to face razor-sharp Stephen Fulton for the bantamweight title that same week in Japan.

It’s Crawford-Spence, however, that will really be the main draw for the boxing fan base and quite possibly more. Neither Crawford 39-0 nor Spence 28-0 knew what defeat tasted like. They also know their legacies are here – in one of the sport’s greatest divisions, nothing less. Finally, each man has the ability to turn off the lights for the other. This is highly desirable for a reason. It would be nice to finally see how it turns out.

“Finally giving the fans what they want!” Spence announced on Instagram. “This is an upside down battle on paper but it could be a one-sided battle into one of the greatest battles of the century!”
