The Shape of Light «Joe McNally Photography
Today and tomorrow, the good old cannon here will take over Profoto IG channel. (Did anyone warn them?)
I’ve always loved playing with light, and as such, I’m a fan of the term light shaping. Big, far light? Or small, close and intimate lights. A long skinny light? A light box? A breakfast dish? Ahhh, it’s like being in the kitchen. How should today’s soup taste?
There is a safe light and an adventure light. The light enveloped and the light fell as decisively as a Vince Carter sleigh. There’s light that caresses a baby’s chin and light that makes hearts beat faster when stroking a beautiful subject. There is light shining on a scene, shining on the subject gently, as silent as dust. And that light screams, Who Let The Dog Out!! ?? !!
A big, very distant light explosion. Behave like the sun. Original and untested. Screaming light.
There is a large soft light, close by.
When experimenting with this type of light, it is always good to have a legend and master of light ready to step in, as in the one and only, Cliff Hausner. Link to Videos BTS from the past few years.
Lightning in the world! The shape of this sunlight is absolutely terrible.
But with a small amount of light, some high-speed sync, and the telephoto lens positioned at the most open f-stop, the scene will be in significantly better shape for our amazing talent in front of the lens. .
Long, thin visors can fit the human body, as that body stretches in a straight line.
Of course, it helps to have people on set who are experts at stabilizing tires. Another joy Videos BTS work with Profoto B1.
Lighting can define the personality and nature of the work.
It can illuminate beauty in sleek ways.
Light can have attitudes.
Or, it could be a positive angel.
Come along for the ride. For the next 48 years, I will post and patrol on Profoto Instagram channel. Photos, thought questions…ask me anything!
