Volkswagen announced the end of Passat production in North America last Julyand the final models rolled off the Chattanooga assembly line in December. In total, the Chattanooga plant built more than 800,000 examples of Passat since the start of production in 2011.
The Passat and the Chattanooga factory are closely related, as it was not only the place where American production of the Passat began, but also the beginning of the United States acquiring a completely unique model of the Passat. It is significantly larger than its European name, and it is made for a more affordable price. While it didn’t quite satisfy car critics, it did resonate with buyers at least for a while. In 2011, the final year of European-style Passat sales in the US, the company only sold 22,835 VND. The following year, with the introduction of the American Passat, 125,212 examples were found home. Still, it was the American Passat’s best-selling year, as sales drop nearly every year after that, except for a slight increase in 2020, which could be a combination of a model made newly launched, as well as a pandemic exotic car market. It’s a bit sad to see another sedan leave the market, but we can’t deny that the Passat isn’t our favorite. It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly competitive. In fact, it was only ever renewed since the US variant was first launched in 2012. The latest update is for model year 2020. It has provided a nicely finished interior, and that interior is still quite large. It’s also a solid cruiser. However, competition can also take place, and to do so without being soft, secretive, and unattractive. Competitions also often offer nicer interiors. The Passat GT 2018 is something of an exception. It doesn’t offer any more power than your typical Passat with its VR6 engine, but sportier suspension and a sweet-sounding exhaust make it a surprisingly enjoyable sedan. However, it was discontinued shortly after its launch.
The European Passat will continue to be offered in their respective markets. Production capacity in Chattanooga will be filled by VW ID.4 . electric SUV. It will join VW Atlasalso factory built.
