The missed mask penalty leaves the Rams with a shot at TD in the fourth quarter versus the Cardinals
A missed mask penalty leaves the Rams with a potential Monday night encounter against the Cardinals.
With eight minutes left in the fourth half and LA facing a third goal and goal from Arizona 7, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was fired by Cardinals defense Jordan Phillips. Video replays show Phillips grabbing Stafford’s mask throughout the play. No penalty is invoked.
In slow motion, viewers can see that Phillips was gripping Stafford’s mask while dragging him to the ground.

The bag was allowed to lose 8 yards, so the Rams had to settle for a goal on the field instead of being able to score one. Los Angeles led 27-20 at the time of the penalty; an additional encounter would most likely mark victory over the NFC leader West. Instead, the Rams took a 30-20 lead with an on-field goal. They won with a score of 30-23.
The missed mask penalty cannot be challenged in the NFL, so officials can’t take a closer look at the game.

NFL Rules Statement that the mask penalty should be called “for twisting, rotating, pushing, pulling, or manipulating the mask.” If the penalty is taken, it will result in an automatic takedown of the Rams at Cardinals ‘3.
ESPN announcers Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick all agreed on the air that there should have been a penalty. Fans agreed on Twitter, and many expressed outrage about the missed call.

Some feedback:
It’s an annoying contradiction. It was Refs’ job to watch qb and he blatantly covered his face. Should be Rams first and goal

The Rams could have challenged not calling on that obvious mask on Stafford. I never understood why some calls were unchallenged. Everything should be challenged.

It was a big missed call on the mask. Perhaps the price of Rams four points.
