Science Fiction, in its most perfect form, acts like a Mobius strip. It criticizes the present by speculating about the future. Then, years later, the original followers looked back and analyzed its projections, knowing full well that science fiction laid out the blueprint for the world they lived in. Unfair or strange, the future always returns by itself. However, it is rare for sci-fi creators to revisit the worlds they built after the events they predicted have kicked in. Of these, Lana and Lilly Wachowski are both singular.
When Matrix Released in 1999, it is a beautifully realized cyberpunk fable. It took the hopeful energy of the early internet years and envisioned what might happen if humanity’s reliance on connectivity and thought machines led to its demise. It’s a grim prediction, but one of a long line of sci-fi stories that herald the near future. Brave new world Prescription antidepressants. Philip K. Dick warned readers about robotics, and now fears of AI uprisings will grow as we electric sheep’s dream (or at least see a Boston Dynamics robot jump). Everyone who works in surveillance technology knows the year 1984. Would virtual reality and augmented reality exist without William Gibson? Nervous Cancer and Business Ussof holodecks?
What the Wachowskis predicted in Matrix—A world where artificial intelligence turns people into batteries and runs simulations to keep them docile — doesn’t quite happen, but hints of it are everywhere. No one lives in a simulation, but Silicon Valley can’t have enough metaverse, usually just a few clicks west. Scientists are working on brain-computer interfaces that could, years from now, send virtual experiences to our brains. AI doesn’t create our reality (it probably is), but it does exist in our cars, TVs, and toothbrushes. The tech geniuses who now run the world grew up with Matrixand now they’re trying to make the simulation a reality. Only many seem to have forgotten the dangers that come with it, missing the point the Wachowskis are trying to make. “Readers often assume that authors are happy when they correctly ‘predict’ future events,'” the writer Madeline Ashby notes in WIRED’s The future of matter of fact, “But rarely are we asked about the nauseating feeling of watching one’s worst vision happen.”

Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) have been sent back to the Matrix, tricked into forgetting about their days as saviors. Thomas Anderson is currently a successful video game designer at a studio called Deus Ex Machina (LOL). He is responsible for a game trilogy called Matrix, which strangely resembles the events of the first three Wachowskis films. He is currently working on a new game called Binary—Perhaps a reference to the coding language, but also an unsophisticated nod to the red pill versus the blue pill, real vs fake, free will versus fate, and , perhaps, the fact that neither gender nor/or.
