The golf world reacts to the death of Lee Elder, the first black golfer to compete in the Masters
Lee Elder, the first black golfer to compete at The Masters in 1975, died at the age of 87 on Monday.
Because of Elder, other black golfers can take part in some of the biggest golf tournaments in the world. For example, the 5-time Masters champion, Tiger Woods was able to win those tournaments thanks to Elder.
Golfers and athletes of other sports paid their respects to Elder after news of his death broke on Monday. Jack Nicklaus, who won that year’s Masters in 1975, paid tribute to Elder on Twitter:
Lee Elder is a pioneer in many fields. Yes, he was the first black golfer to play in @TheMasters, but that simply underscores the hard work Lee has done to continue towards the goals of all those who have dreams of playing on @PGATOUR and think that there are too many barriers in front of them.

At the Masters 2021, Elder, along with Nicklaus and Gary Player, were the honorary starters at the ceremonial first tee. This is the first time Elder has participated in this annual tradition. Players also pay tribute to Elder on Twitter.

Elder is a four-time PGA Tour champion after turning pro in 1959. He won his first touring event in 1974 at the Monsanto Open, which is how he was able to qualify. qualified for the 1975 Masters. However, he competed in his first major tournament in 1966 at the US Open. His last major tournament was in 1984 at the PGA Championship, and he didn’t qualify. He officially retired in 2005, but his last win was in 1988 in the Senior League.
Harold Varner III, now on the PGA Tour, posted a video on Monday explaining how important Elder has been to his golf career:

Elderly athletes are also affected by other sports. Tennis legend Billie Jean King, the first openly gay tennis player, paid tribute to Elder on Twitter. NBA star Steph Curry also wrote a lengthy post expressing her gratitude to the late eldest Briton.
In 1975, Lee Elder became the first black golfer to participate in the Masters tournament.
He also broke other color barriers.

Tiger Woods has yet to post on social media about Elder’s departure, but since Woods won his first Masters championship in 1997, he has shown how much of a hero Elder is to him. .
