Round 4 – North Brisbane (Final)
With Endorphin Communication
Wednesday night saw the final round of the 2023 Australian Speed Racing Championship held in North Brisbane. The team from Darcy Ward Speedway Promotions have been preparing the track for days and it looks like an absolute picture.
Jason Doyle entered this fourth and final round with a three-point lead over Jack Holder and 12 points ahead of Rohan Tungate. Doyle had won the main final in each of the previous three rounds; Gillman (SA), Albury-Wodonga and Kurri Kurri (NSW), before the championship final takes place in Queensland on Wednesday night.
Local star Ryan Douglas was a wild card for the North Brisbane round and placed the cat among pigeons during the night, doing Jason Doyle’s job in the semi-final.
Overall though this was largely a crash-free race night. Michael West had his chain broken at the starting line in the 18th game and was replaced by Jacob Hook as a reserve driver. In the 18th game with Josh Pickering leading Jason Doyle, Doyle made a last-minute dash but James Pearson held on to the victory.
Heat 20 is an exciting race with Cooper Riordan, Jack Holder, Rohan Tungate and local wild card Ryan Douglas as the warriors. In the beginning, Tungate won first place but the proceedings were later red flaged due to movement on the rope from Riordan.
Tungate was ahead of T1 and T2 in the re-start but with Holder cutting and Douglas going around outside to lead T3. Holder moved onto Tungate’s rear wheel as they left T4 in the second round and could then slide below Tungate in T4, but Douglas took the lead. At the exit of T2, the next ring holder is pushed up and leaves only a small gap for Tungate in the wall, which causes Douglas to exit forward with Holder 2rankTungate 3rank and Cooper Riordan in 4order.
When they turned to leave the track, there was a small argument between Holder and Tungate while they were still cycling.
Then, when they dismounted and were still full of adrenaline, Tungate lunged at Jack Holder.
Chris Holder was quickly on the scene with Kevin Apps (COC) and Starter Anthony Driscoll.
Everything was settled and the procedures continued as the riders were escorted to the pit. This is not a new field for this couple as Tungate and Holder were in a similar situation several years ago.
As the event entered the semi-finals, Doyle had 61 points, Jack Holder on 59, Max Fricke on 50 and Rohan Tungate on 49. Max Fricke was probably the driver of the night leading up to the semifinals.
The semi-finals have delivered some great races, but under the championship scoring system, the semi-finalists earn no points, only one spot in the final. Doyle’s fate is in his own hands as he has stated that he will not race in Australia in the future and is clearly aiming to come out on top. Semifinal 1 saw Douglas, Fricke, Doyle and Cook go to war.
Fricke had a great start but Douglas caught up with him in the T3 exit, leaving Doyle in third and Cook in fourth. This is the first finale Doyle misses in the series. One can only imagine what could have happened if Douglas had entered the entire championship.
Jack Holder, Ryan Tungate, Bradley Kurtz and Zane Kelleher compete for tickets to the semi-finals. Kelleher had been the standout outside the gate all night but this time around, Holder had a rough start to get past T1 and T2 from Tungate, as Kurtz and Kelleher jostled for places.
They all went to the finals.
Jack Holder, Max Fricke, Ryan Douglas, Rohan Tungate. Douglas had been booing at the starting gate outside all evening but Fricke was quickly out of the gate in red, with Holder in second and Douglas in third right behind.
Holder advanced to the ring at T3 and overcame Fricke, with Douglas and Tungate in hot pursuit. Douglas then rose to second for the second time as a rounded T1. Fricke then turned around and overtook Douglas in the inner round through T3.
The holder gave a good lead as he took the lead into the final lap, taking time to peek as he passed T4. The positions did not change as they circled towards the checkered flag. The holder had time to raise his hand in victory as he left T4.
The first person to congratulate Holder was his brother Chris, who had previously won five Aussie titles.
Jason Doyle had some select words in his podium interview about Motorcycling Australia’s efforts to promote the motorway, but later retracted those comments for 36 hours on social media. festival.
At the final and throughout the quick shoot series, there were some great races with some excellent individual performances.
Congratulations to Jack Holder, our 2023 Australian Singles Race Champion.
There are also some great skills shown by young people on the support card.
