The best makeup brushes for every step of your routine
The bristles and shape of the brush may not be the first thing you consider when buying a brush, but the brush you choose can ruin or break your makeup application. It depends on the type of makeup formula you will use more often (liquid, powder, etc.) and the type of makeup you will choose.
When it comes to brush bristles, there are natural, synthetic and blends of both. René says the double-strand brush (a mixture of synthetic and natural hair) is great for polishing and blending cream or liquid products and leaves a seamless, smooth look. You can also use them for some powdered products. Synthetic brushes are great for skin care, foundation, and liquid or cream concealer applications. Natural brush is mainly used for loose or pressed powder products. And some dense or loose brushes. “Dense short brushes are great for contouring or full coverage of textured skin, while soft smooth brushes are great for light applications of products,” explains René. “Renee explained.
As for shapes, René says there’s no wrong way to use them but she did come up with a few ways she personally uses each:
Slim: Great for blending
Flat/Dense: Full coverage application or contouring of the face (such as contouring with cream products)
Fluffy / Round: Great to be used for concealer, eye shadow, blush, highlighter, and fine lines.
Fluffy Angled / Tapered: Great for bronzers and blushers, sometimes highlighter
