As of now, this is a familiar story: Right after we recovered from the devastation of Delta Covid-19 variant, a new one appeared. The Omicron variant is spreading faster than any other variant before it, which means that vaccination is no longer providing enough protection. To protect yourself, you need to keep your social distance, increase ventilation and – yes – cover your face.

Here are some masks and masks that I and other WIRED staff members are using. I’ve also highlighted sustainable options, masks from diverse and small manufacturers, as well as companies that donate masks or share profits with worthy causes. Try it a few times, but remember to hold off wash your hand, stay home when possible, get tested often, and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others in public (preferably outdoors).
How we rate masks
Earlier this year, materials testing organization ASTM International announced first production standard about what constitutes a good veil. Based on these guidelines, the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health recommends that if you go into the office, you should use a respirator that meets the Minimum ASTM guidelines.
The advent of ASTM standards means that it is now difficult for me to recommend non-certified face coverings. But it will take time for each mask manufacturer to test their products. In the meantime, make sure your mask adheres recommended principles from CDC, fit and clean. A good reusable mask should cover your nose and mouth completely, use at least two layers of fabric, and be washable. When I receive a mask, I use the light and candle test first — can I see light through the textile? Can I blow out a candle while wearing it? The weave of the mask should be tight enough to prevent you from doing either of those things. Then I wear them when I go grocery shopping or walk the dog.
