Duggar Baucom, The Citadel’s men’s basketball coach, collapsed within the first two minutes of his team’s game against Number 5 Duke on Monday night.
Baucom, 61, fell to the ground after his team shot the first basket to make it 3-2. Baucom remained conscious as he was helped off the field at Cameron Indoor Stadium. He was taken to Duke University Hospital for an evaluation.
The crash happened all of a sudden, as shown in the video below:

Citadel assistant coach Jack Castleberry took over as interim coach for the remainder of the match. The last castle lost to the Duke 107-81.
During his post-game press conference, Castleberry said Baucom spoke to him after the incident and said he was in great pain. This shocked Castleberry because he said Baucom was “the toughest guy I know.”

Citadel assistant coach Jack Castleberry said Duggar Baucom is “as good as he can be. He’s in good spirits.”

The reason for Baucom’s demise is currently unknown. The most recent update on his condition is that he has gone to the hospital and is being looked into for any related issues.

Baucom, in his seventh year of coaching The Citadel, was still able to meet Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski for the first time before the game started.
Baucom told the media before the game that he used to listen to Duke’s games as a North Carolina State trooper and that meeting Krzyzewski and the coach against him was “surreal.” The 2021-22 season is the last season of Coach K.
