WiTricity on Wednesday announced a new aftermarket wireless charging system for electric vehicles – including the Tesla Model 3.
The company says the WiTricity Halo Charging system will be available for select EV models as a “limited beta” starting later this year, with wider availability in 2023, the company said. know.
The system will be capable of charging at 11 kW, adding a range of 35 to 40 miles per hour of charge, the company claims. It consists of three components: the power receiver is mounted on the vehicle, the wall box is connected to the mains, and the charging base is connected to the box and installed on or under the ground.

WiTricity says it has been testing the system with a Tesla Model 3 since October 2021. Testers have found that a full recharge takes six hours, according to the company.
Engineers are also equipping a Ford Mustang Mach-E for wireless charging, “with more vehicles in the pipeline,” the company notes.
This is the same Halo technology sourced from Qualcomm, but purchased by WiTricity in 2019. Since then, Mitsubishi has also invested in WiTricity to support wireless charging in future models.

WiTricity isn’t the first company to offer an aftermarket wireless charging system. Plugless Power’s The second-generation system has been offered to the Tesla Model S and BMW i3 since 2016.
