Tesla is releasing a software update that will keep drivers from playing video games on their car’s entertainment system while the car is in motion, according to a statement Thursday from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. .

NHTSA on Wednesday said it had opened an investigation involving 580,000 Tesla Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles sold between 2017 and 2022 after receiving a complaint in August. The agency said it was looking into whether drivers could be distracted from playing the game on their car’s home screen, by using the “Passenger Play” feature.

An NHTSA spokesperson said in an emailed statement: “After opening a preliminary review of Tesla’s ‘Passenger Play’ feature, Tesla has informed the agency that it is changing the functionality of the feature. this ability. “In a new software update, ‘Passenger Play’ will now be locked and unusable while the vehicle is in motion.”

The agency is keeping a close eye on Tesla.

Earlier this month, NHTSA said it was communicating with the electric-car maker about faulty Autopilot cameras on some vehicles it manufactures in Fremont, California.
