The more data your business has – and the more sources it pulls from – the more complex it becomes to aggregate all of it and extract meaningful insights from the numbers. Software ETL Automate this data collection process for your company, helping to make data-driven decisions. Today, we’re comparing ETL software solutions offered by Talend and Fivetran to help you decide which is right for your business.

What is Talend?

Talend is a suite of cloud-based data applications designed for ETL work. It’s open source, so it’s easy to get started with the free basics and build your own data connectors to whatever specs you need. Some paid plans offer more capabilities.

What is Fivetran?

Fivetran is a SaaS data integration service that makes it simple to connect all your data and applications with automated pipelines. Fivetran is not open source, so although it offers a lot of ready-made data connectors, you cannot build your own.

Codeless Platform

Fivetran is designed to get you up and running within days or even hours, and it requires no coding knowledge to work, although it does offer the option to customize queries via SQL if you have that knowledge. As a result, you don’t need a dedicated data engineer to launch and use Fivetran, which makes it a great choice for teams that don’t have that kind of support. Talend is also a code-free platform when deployed with Pipeline Designer and Talend Studio products, and the platform does not require a data engineer.

Data source and extraction

Fivetran offers over 100 data connections out of the box, and the service regularly adds more. Fivetran’s out-of-box connection covers quite a few major data sources, including Oracle, Zoho, Salesforce, and SAP. If you just need to connect to traditional data sources, Fivetran will likely provide everything you need in one simple to use package.

Technically, Fivetran offers the option to build a custom “functional connector”, but the software emphasizes a selection of existing connectors and some users have noted that they sometimes wonder how often they can’t connect to the data they need.

If you need to get data from a variety of unusual sources, Talend is a better choice. Thanks to the open source nature of the software, there are more than 1,000 connections available have been built by Talend himself or by other users and more are added all the time, so you have more to choose from than with Fivetran.

Data analysis and visualization

While there are a ton of great business intelligence software options out there that make it easy to analyze and visualize your platform, not every company wants to add another solution to the mix. Fivetran provides basic data analytics visualization, allowing you to quickly extract insights from data.

Talend also offers this capability through Talend Open Data Studio, which is a separate download. The graphical dialogue tools and charts are pretty crude aesthetically, but they get the job done, especially for internal analysis. If you want a powerful BI platform, you’ll probably need to consider a separate solution, such as Microsoft Power BI.

Talend vs. Fivetran: Which should you choose?

Both Talend and Fivetran are solid offerings in the ETL category, but they are designed with different users in mind. Fivetran makes more sense for beginners and non-software professionals who need to connect to popular data sources quickly and easily without coding knowledge. Talend is designed for power users looking for more data connectivity opportunities.
