SUVs get refresh following EVs, PHEV push gets renewed momentum

As Volvo continues its move towards all-electric vehicles, electric models that still use gasoline will continue to play a very important role in its lineup.

With the disclosure of a wide Volvo XC90 2025.5 series is renewed On Wednesday in Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo highlighted the direction these models will take—and made it clear that while the recently launched EX90 will lead the way, the XC90 won’t be far behind.

A new grille design with “symmetrical horizontal bars” gives gasoline-powered Volvos a new look and adds a new twist to Volvo’s diagonal grille bar, framed in either bright or gloss black with matching trim (though US versions will only get the bright look). Slimmer headlights feature 15-segment matrix LED technology and improved active headlight technology with integrated cornering lights, while retaining the “Thor’s hammer” look, and the hood and front fenders have been resculpted to match the front end. New wheel designs, darkened taillights, and a new Mulberry Red color scheme round out the look elsewhere.

XC90 uses Google platform, still retains CarPlay

While those changes are all but a mild refresh on the outside, the most significant changes to the XC90 are on the inside. The center console tunnel area has also been redesigned to make it easier to store phones, with the wireless charger moved to the front section.

The dimensions of the XC90 haven’t changed much. It’s about 195 inches long, has a 117.5-inch wheelbase, and stands just under 70 inches tall. The XC90 will be offered in six- and seven-seat configurations, with the main difference being two captain’s chairs in the second row. Both configurations include second- and third-row seats that fold flat, with a panoramic roof that lets in light into the interior, which tends to be light and detailed in terms of details and textures. Volvo includes PM2.5 air filtration in all versions, with some versions offering four-zone adjustment.

Features and U.S. pricing for the 2025.5 XC90 have yet to be revealed, but Volvo says it will starting at $59,745 including a $1,295 destination charge. In its global appearance revealed on Wednesday, the XC90 is offered in Plus and Ultra trims, upholstered in quilted Nordico fabric or herringbone fabric. Again, the XC90 can be equipped with a Harman Kardon premium audio system or, even more, a Bowers & Wilkins system with 19 speakers and four surround-sound listening modes.

Volvo’s PHEV: An EV Contingency Plan?

Volvo calls its XC90 T8 “an electric car with a backup,” though the T8 is still the top trim and one of many plug-in hybrids that offer a more engaging driving experience when its gasoline engine kicks in. It retains Pure, Hybrid, Power, Constant AWD, and Off-Road modes. The T8 plug-in hybrid retains a 18.8-kwh triple-cell battery pack (14.7-kwh usable)—the same battery pack it launched with. many of the company’s plug-in hybrid models over the past few years—and it makes 310 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from its gas engine plus 145 horsepower and 228 lb-ft in electric drive mode. Volvo predicts 33 miles of all-electric driving according to EPA standards.

The rest of the 2025.5 XC90 lineup will include a base B5 with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Next up is the B6, with a more powerful engine that makes 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Both models are set to achieve EPA combined figures of 26 mpg and 23 mpg combined, and both are 48-volt mild hybrid technology Especially helps increase fuel efficiency when driving light trucks and stop and go.

The interior climate control system helps conserve battery life on plug-in hybrids by warming (or cooling) the cabin before trips. It includes windshield de-icing; it can be activated by app or time.

Volvo says the higher-powered 6.4kW onboard charger will help PHEV owners charge more at destinations and between trips. And the XC90 is Plug & Charge compatible, according to Volvo. Volvo says it has redesigned the charging port, but doesn’t mention Tesla-based NACS gateway not yet.

The facelifted XC90 will be designated the 2025.5 model year because it will overlap slightly with the 2025 XC90, which only recently began arriving at U.S. dealerships. The 2025.5 XC90 will be available to order later this year and will arrive in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2025.
