Sunny Edwards-Galal Yafai to be announced on November 30 in Birmingham

SUNNY EDWARDS and GALAL YAFAI will settle their feud in Birmingham on November 30.

The two British flyweights have long been linked with a fight and speculation has only grown stronger as Edwards joins Yafai at Matchroom in March 2023.

At the time, Edwards was the IBF Flyweight world champion with an unbeaten record of 19-0 (4 KOs) while Yafai had just three fights under his belt. However, with his amateur background, the Birmingham native had his eyes set on world titles as soon as he joined Eddie Hearn in January 2022.

The 2020 Olympic gold medallist is currently unbeaten in seven fights but Edwards lost his unbeaten record and world title to the brilliant Jesse Rodriguez last December. He then returned to win over Adrian Curiel in June. Boxing News asked Edwards about a potential war with Yafai.

“The only two names mentioned to me in this contract are Curiel and Galal. If those are my next two fights, then I’m excited. It’s been a great year. Great events. Main support for one and headliner for another. Sounds perfect. Olympic gold medalist against a former world champion who boxed as an amateur.”

Edwards, 28, is keen to become a two-time world champion but knows that defeat to Yafai would dash those hopes. Yafai, 31, not only needs to beat Edwards but also fight for a world title in 2025 when time is still on his side in the smaller weight class.
