Summary after the opening day of MotoGP at Mandalika

MotoGP World Championship 2024
Round 15 – Mandalika – Friday
Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia

It wasn’t until there were less than 15 minutes left in the Friday afternoon session that the soft rubber was applied and times began to fall.

Jorge Martin set an initial target of 1m30.317 with 13 minutes to go. The Spaniard then immediately bested that mark by more than half a second, 1m29.670 for Mandalika’s fastest ever new motorcycle lap by more than three-tenths.

Pedro Acosta was next at 29, followed shortly by Enea Bastianini, who pushed the young GASGAS rider into third place with ten minutes left in the round. The Beast’s next lap promoted him to P1, surpassing Martin by four hundredths of a second to lower the lap record again.

With five minutes remaining in the session, Pecco Bagnaia was just outside the top 10. Bastianini was top ahead of Martin, Acosta, Di Giannantonio, Vinales and Marc Marquez.

Alex Marquez has been hot on Bagnaia’s heels in a bid to move up the order, but he was dropped at 16 as he struggled to match the reigning champion’s pace.

Pecco Bagnaia then did what he needed to when it mattered, his 1m29.712 moving him up to third place. However, not long after, a few seconds later Morbidelli pushed Bagnaia to fourth place.

When the clock hit zero, some drivers were already on their fastest laps.

Bastianini was having his worst previous performance and was on his way to lowering the lap record again before being helped by Fabio Di Giannantonio. Seconds later, Di Giannantonio fell while trying to improve from ninth place.

Pecco Bagnaia ran out of fuel after the start of practice and was pulled back to the pits by Marc Marquez.

Enea Bastianini finished in the top position Friday and not only that, the Italian also made a jump of 1m29 and seemed to want to increase the speed…

Jorge Martin is just behind but not as fast as Bastianini. Franco Morbidelli is also right there and Bagnaia is also a tenth away from Bastianini. GP24 1-2-3-4.

Marco Bezzecchi finished the day fifth while Fabio Quartararo finished sixth ahead of Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta.,

Fabio Di Giannantonio was in ninth and Maverick Vinales rounded out the top 10 ahead of Honda Johann Zarco.

Miguel Oliveira broke his right wrist in the morning and did not participate this afternoon.

Practice conditions were dry with ambient temperatures around 30 degrees and track temperatures of 57 degrees. Humidity is 76%. salty…

Moto3

Collin Veijer topped Moto3 on Friday ahead of Fernandez and Almansa.

Joel Kelso finished 12th while compatriot Jacob Roulstone only made it into the top 20.

Jacob Roulstone – P19

The first day in Indonesia wasn’t too bad. I struggled a bit to find my lines and learn my way around the first exit this morning. We went in to try to understand everything. In the afternoon, I tried running long distances with used soft tires but I wasn’t very confident about that. I changed in the middle of the session and I felt we played better. My main difficulty was the corner entries today and you need to have confidence for these, which overall I didn’t have today, so that’s where we’ll need to improve for Tomorrow.”
