Shelby, N.C – ONE PETA Witness Investigation participation in the Shelby replacement livestock auction at the Cleveland County Farm Animal Exchange showing vulnerable animals — including wildlife native to other countries — being abused physically, roughed, and tortured by behaviors that appear to have no knowledge of or concern for their treatment and needs:

  • Workers kick animals, hit them with electric poles, pull goats with their horns, and hold a frenzied wildcat and an upside-down coatimundi by their tails.
  • A worker bangs a baby goat’s head against a metal fence.
  • Workers lift animals — including nocturnal species and fearsome predators — into the air and jostle in their cages, while auctioneers and sellers scream.
  • A zonkey struggled and cried out when his leg got caught in the door of a pen, and he was seen limping in pain after he was finally freed.
  • The exotic cattle sold at auction, including the zebu and the Watusi, have thin skeletons, with ribs and hip bones clearly visible.
  • The animals, some of which have been dragged hundreds of miles, are trapped in cramped cages and improvised cages, so small they cannot stand or turn.

Videos and photos from the survey are available here and here.

PETA submitted a formal complaint this morning to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)request an investigation into violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, and Cleveland County Animal Services, demanding an immediate investigation into the many apparent violations of county and state animal protection laws. PETA is also urging operators of Cleveland County Agricultural Pet Exchange cancel exotic animal auctions scheduled for March 18 and 19 and ban exotic animal auctions on its premises, as handlers and operators clearly do not know even the methods of handling them. Basic animal logic to reduce fear, panic, and pain.

Auction customers include the owner of the notorious roadside zoo Iredell County Zootastic Park– who has been repeatedly cited by the USDA for not providing adequate veterinary care for the animals, among other violations – who has purchased birds and offered for sale species of marsupials, cranes, parrots, and a kitten.

“Animals at the Shelby replacement pet auction are kicked, chased, beaten and yelled at before being sold,” said Daphna Nachminovitch, PETA Senior Vice President of Crime Investigation. “PETA wants this to be the last time that wallbirds, swans, wind monkeys, and other vulnerable alien animals are mistreated at the Cleveland County Agricultural Livestock Exchange.”

PETA — in part, their motto that “animals are not ours to eat, use for recreation, or otherwise abuse” — advocates speciesism, a world human perspective – supremacy.
