Stop telling your kids that climate change will destroy their world – Would you enjoy it?

Essay by Eric Worrall

Vox’s Contributor Kelsey Piper describes her realization that climate anxiety is a far worse threat to children’s welfare than climate change.

Don’t tell the kids that climate change will destroy their world

Some “climate anxiety” is the product of telling kids – falsely – that they have no future.

My 5-year-old daughter is now old enough to read a lot of children’s books and magazines, and that has given me a whole new perspective on life. debate war about how we talk about climate change, conservation and the future of the planet.

As I wrote ago, climate change will get worse, and it will hold back humanity from flourishing as much as we should this century. It may cause mass migration and displacement and extinction of many species.

What it won’t do, however, is make the Earth uninhabitable, or even mean our children live in a world poorer than the one we grew up in. As many climate scientists have told usThe world is a better place to live – especially for people in lower-income countries – than ever before, and climate change won’t be as bad as it was in 1950.

“I categorically reject, scientifically and personally, the notion that children are somehow destined for a life of unhappiness,” said Kate Marvel, a climate scientist at Columbia, told Ezra Klein in his column this week about overcoming climate despair.

“There may not be a world to live in when she grows up. What good is a school without a future? A page depicts Thunberg thinking. Even as a set-up for Thunberg’s rise as an activist, I’m not happy about that message. Some children may hear it and be inspired to speak before the United Nations, but most children will hear it and get scared and depressed.

That pessimistic message seems to be sinking deep into the youth. One year 2021 research sponsored by the Avaaz campaign and research team polled by 10,000 people ages 16 to 25, and found that more than half believe humanity has “perished” because of climate change.

There is something puzzling and cruel about people who seem to try to tell the kids that they all suffer.

Think of all the stories of people taking shelter from the flash of World War 2, or other terrible circumstances. Parents in shelters don’t tell their kids all the ways they’re going to die, they try to shield their kids from the horror, read them stories, whatever distracts them. medium, giving them some peace and even joy, while muffled Explosions pierced their shelter as NAZI bombs fell on London.

But many climate activists seem to want to do the opposite. What do they take out of it? Are they agitated, to see the small faces of the children in their care contorted with fear and despair, under the weight of the pessimism that pervades their perdition?

Even if the stories of climate fear were true, which is clearly not the case, people with a little compassion would not inflict such cruelty on children.
