Steve Bannon, who served as former President Donald Trump’s political strategist, is pleading not guilty to federal charges for defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6 attacks. into the US Capitol.
Bannon is indicted last week on two counts of contempt of Congress, and first appeared on monday in federal court in Washington, DC
In a document filed in court on Wednesday, Bannon waives his right to a settlement and pleads not guilty. The document was signed by Bannon and one of his attorneys, M. Evan Corcoran.
Bannon is scheduled to appear virtual during a press conference in this case on Thursday.
The charges against Bannon stem from his failure to appear to be impeached before a Democratic-led House committee on January 6, as well as his failure to produce documents in response to a subpoena court from the panel.
Bannon has stated that he was shielded from testifying by Trump’s assertion of executive privilege, even though Bannon had not served in the Trump administration for many years when the attack on the Capitol took place.
After his first court appearance on Monday, Bannon vowed to fight the charges against him. He also took aim at the Biden administration.
“I’m telling you right now, this is going to be misdemeanor from hell, for Merrick Garland, Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden,” Bannon told reporters outside court. “We are tired of playing defensively, we will continue to attack on this.”
