St Louis Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado, Genesis Cabrera suspended for roles in bench-breaking brawl
The Cardinals of St. Louis third warrior Nolan Arenado and the pitcher Genesis Cabrera each received a suspension from Major League Baseball for their role in the bench brawl in their 10-5 win last Wednesday. New York Mets at Busch Stadium.
Arenado received a two-match ban for “contributing to inciting the incident”, the federation announced on Thursday, while Cabrera received a one-match ban. Both were also fined an undisclosed amount.
Arenado is appealing his suspension and begins Thursday night against Arizona Diamondbacks. Cabrera will serve a suspension on Thursday.
Cabrera hits Mets hitter JD Davis with a pitch at the start of the eighth inning, the biggest league-leading 19th game to hit the field for the Mets this season. It happened the day after St. Louis hit three men who hit the Mets with a throw on Tuesday night.
New York appeared to retaliate half-time later against Arenado when the Mets cut off the attack Yoon Lopez pulls a 94 mph fast ball near his head. Arenado began shouting at Lopez to “do it again.” The benches and barns were cleared, and the teams jostled each other near the home area.
Later, Captain Mark Wegner said Arenado was ejected to charge the mound. Lopez remained in the game.
Lopez also received an undisclosed fine for his role in the incident, while two other players – Cardinals pitchers Jack Flaherty and the Mets . pitcher Taijuan Walker – was fined for participating in a bench brawl while on the injured list.
