Square Enix’s Forspoken has a release date of May 2022

Forspoken, a game whose name I will never pronounce correctly but was once known as Project Athia, finally has a specific release date. Announced tonight at Game Award, Square Enix’s massive action role-playing adventure hits PC on May 24, 2022. I guess that’s still technically considered ‘spring’ and thus doesn’t constitute a delay in the door earlier release, but definitely much closer to summer than I had expected. In any case, there’s a shiny new trailer with some very hammy villains to enjoy at the same time.

Forspoken is the next game from Luminous Productions, the studio that brought us Final Fantasy XV. Despite sharing the same views on realism as Noctis and his bandmates, Forspoken seems to be a very different taste of the action RPG. It puts you in the shoes of New Yorker Frey Holland, who suddenly finds herself alone and under attack from some ferocious-looking dragons in Athia’s fantasy world one day. Seriously, I’ve heard of the urban jungle, but this really takes its toll.

In the new trailer, we’ll learn a little more about Frey’s role in this new world. Despite being branded ‘hellspawn’ by an angry-looking priest (okay, mate) and deemed unable to survive the corruption that pervades the land, Frey agrees to help the last of the citizens. The last of Athia get some answers as to why their world died.

Turns out she’s not powerless after all, as not only is her ability to leap across lovely-looking landscape (not to mention gliding through it on a crystal hoverboard), but she can also shoot energy blasts from her hands, conjure huge flaming swords, wield a bow, command the elements… Looks very interesting.

Frey can also become invisible at one point, but I hope this doesn’t mean there are hidden parts involved in failure, because we all know they are the absolute worst. That said, I’m not sure it’s worse than that giant’s wicked chuckle at 1:13. Jeep car. It was a scream.

Flashy combat (and gruesome laughs) aside, it’s Forspoken’s delivery system that intrigues me the most. There seems to be an element of struggle around the landscape, but I’m curious to know how it all feels under the thumb. Jogging around the plains in Final Fantasy XV has always been more of a chore than I’d liked in years past, although some of Frey’s moves look reminiscent of Noctis’ teleporting abilities in battle.

Fingers crossed some of my old FFXV muscle memory back when Forspoken launched on Steam, the Microsoft Store, and the Epic Games Store on May 24, 2022.

We’re staying up late covering the upcoming PC game from tonight’s lavish marketing: our hit Game Award tag everything.
