Southwest Airlines admits an insult would drive people crazy

Let’s start with the good news.

Customers still love Southwest Airlines. Yes, relatively speaking.

The airline has canceled a lot of flights this year but, in the new North American airline satisfaction study JD Power 2022Southwest remains the absolute favorite of economy class passengers.

For comparison, United Airlines came in seventh. American Airlines, ninth.

It often feels like Southwest, as airlines go, is not merely a good airline to fly to but a good company to work for.

Currently, they are trying to recruit as many people as possible, due to the increasing enthusiasm of tourism. It needs 10,000 more employees, including 1,200 more pilots.

Then you would think that quite a few people might want to work for Southwest.

Looks like they do. However, there is a small problem. It’s an issue that has clearly vexed Southwest’s management and has had a significant impact on the airline’s ability to provide customers with the kind of service they want to enjoy.

Why different Southwest admitthe The Wall Street Journal report, that between 15% and 20% of the people it hires simply doesn’t show up? When.

Of course you’ve heard of ghosts. Of course you’ve done online dating.

However, the job specter seems to be reaching an eerie epidemic proportions. Does every interviewer look at every potential employee these days and wonder, “Will you still show up?”

Seems like a lot of people don’t mind. This is offensive, but would also lead one to speculate why the practice is so much more common.

Maybe they had multiple offers. Perhaps they are getting better offers after accepting the offer from Southwest. Ghosts still don’t make a human look good.

However, I fear that there is another dynamic, one that does not put companies in such good visibility.

How many times have you heard, over time, job seekers say they’ve never heard from a potential employer for weeks – or sometimes even not at all?

So why should employers be so upset when the practice is turned on for them? And hasn’t technology made us instantly fired – as well as instant lust – about anything and everything? Often without notice that layoffs at all?

Potential employees have also learned what most companies now consider them to be absolutely indispensable. They may tell them they need them and love them, but as soon as a company’s quarterly profits drop a bit, the knee-jerk reaction is to drop. They make it seem like an obvious move.

As a result, the potential employer-employee relationship is already contaminated before it even begins.

The airline industry has a reputation as one of the worst. During the pandemic, airlines quickly said goodbye to employees, while taking billions of dollars from the government.

Perhaps, then, they have built a reputation as exceptionally light workplaces. If a recession hits, employees know they’ll be fired quickly.

However, 15-20% of the ghosting you can indicate you need to be more careful. Perhaps you need to adjust your work practices or your salary.

I wonder if Southwest will take note of those who don’t show up – in case their names show up in the future. No, not on airline manifests, but on future job applications.

Then again, imagine if an airline employee was on a flight and realized someone didn’t show up on their first day.

That would be an interesting conversation.
