South Africa Thrash Britain as the ‘Bazball’ Era returns to Earth

South Africa inflicted England’s first defeat of the ‘Bazball’ era as they won the First Test by a crushing run and 12 runs with more than two days to spare at Lord’s on Friday . England were knocked out 149 in the second inning before tea on Tuesday, with the Proteas winning the game in six sessions after much of Wednesday’s first day was lost in the rain. Left side spinner Keshav Maharaj hit twice before the fast bowler Anrich Nortje What followed was a fantastic spell of three hits without running for 10 balls as Proteas, the leader of the World Test Championship table, led 1-0 in a three-game series.

England have won all four of their previous Tests under the new captain’s leadership Ben Stokes and the coach Brendon McCullumunder the name ‘Bazball’.

However, each of those victories came after a fierce fight in the fourth round, instead of having to fix the total and before this match, the South African captain Dean Elgar questioned whether an all-out policy would work with his formidable bowling lineup.

“Anger Nortje”

“Anrich Nortje’s magic just broke the back of England’s innings,” Elgar said at the introduction ceremony after Proteas had conceded the hosts under 37.4 rounds.

“He ran in with a lot of intent and anger. It was nice to watch from where I was standing, and I’m sure it wasn’t nice to face.”

South Africa now have a few more days of rest before the second test at Old Trafford begins on Thursday, with opening hitter Elgar adding: “We’ll enjoy tonight, I’m sure. Anyway. It’s also Friday.”

Stokes, who took over as captain from Joe Root with England winning only one of their previous 17 checks, saying it would be “silly” for him if not disappointing.

But the all-rounder added: “We know, when we’re at our best, we can put on some incredible performances, as you’ve seen in four games. before this match.

“This is not a wake-up call or anything like that, just unfortunately we weren’t able to perform the way we wanted to play this week and South Africa was better than us.”

Maharaj, who did not fully compete in England’s meager first inning of 165, sparked Saturday’s drop by eliminating Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope for a notable period before lunch of 2-6 in the three subplots.

Maharaj, coming on as the earliest on the seventh goal in an Elgar tactical coup, scored with just the third ball as he had Crawley lbw for 13 after a difficult opening missed a sweep .

Pope, whose 73-year-old was the only man in England’s first half, was then blocked by Maharaj for the final ball of the session as he managed to tackle the ball at his feet.

England, 38-2 at lunch, soon followed by 57-3 when the tempo controller Lungi Ngidi had Batman star Joe Root trapped by Aiden Markram for six.

Jonny Bairstow entered this match having scored four hundred points in multiple Tests only to be caught after 18 quick games of Nortje on Friday.

Left hand opener Alex Leesdropped to 4th, having gone beyond the unconvincing 35 as he overpowered Nortje for goalkeeping Kyle Verreyne.

Two balls later, England’s 86-5 becomes 86-6 when Ben Foakes fell by a duck, a careless slip outside a tree stump gives opposing glove-wearer Verreynne another simple chance.

Wide, little to lose, hooked Nortje with six in sunny conditions, ideal for hitting the ball even though he couldn’t take his eyes off the ball.

But the bowler is fast Kagiso Rabadawho brilliantly won 5-52 in the first inning, got Broad with a clever slower ball which the defender deflected to Elgar in the middle of the half to finish 35 entertaining – the overall score of the half .

England then lost two sticks in two balls, Matthew Potts bowled by Marco Jansen before Stokes (20) was shorted by Maharaj, the match keeper Rabada caught up.

Towering fast left hand Jansen, who earlier on Friday scored 48 of South Africa’s 326, ended the match decisively with the last man bowling clean James Anderson.
