Sonya Massey’s son recounts learning she was shot dead by police

Sonya Massey called the Illinois police after believing someone was trying to break into her home. But her plea for service and protection ended with Sonya dead on the kitchen floor. Now, her son, Malachi Hill, is breaking his silence about how he learned that a police officer shot her dead.

Sonya’s son Malachi Hill speaks out

Speaking to media outlets, including Fox Illinois, Malachi said he was never contacted by the police department about the fatal shooting of his mother. Instead, he received a call from St. John’s HSHS, where staff told him that Sonya Massey had been shot in the eye and the bullet had passed through her neck.

Sonya Massey’s son says the hospital didn’t tell him who did it but kept repeating that “someone” shot her.

“But they never told me who shot my mother. And I think I was the first one to find out. I had to go and tell my grandmother myself. That’s all I could say,” Malachi shared.

As previously reported, Sonya’s father recently shared similar sentiments as his nephew on ‘CBS Mornings.’ James Wilburn said he was never told it was an officer-involved shooting. “We have the impression that she was killed by an intruder or someone on the street, and they just went in there and found her body,” he shared. Additionally, Wilburn said there was even an account that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

Here’s What Happened to Sonya Massey

As Justin Carter of TSR Investigates previously reported, the 36-year-old died on July 6 in Springfield, Illinois. Body camera footage shows the moment two police officers arrived at Sonya’s home, and she welcomed them into her living room, warning them not to harm her.

After interacting with them in the living room, Sonya went to the kitchen to get a pot of boiling water. One of the policemen, Officer Sean P. Graysonadding to the tension in the room as he began yelling at Sonya to put the pot down or risk getting shot in the face.

In response, Sonya Massey repeatedly apologized, but Grayson pulled the trigger, firing three shots at her.

A bullet hit Massey in the face about 31 minutes after she called 911 at 12:50 a.m. Doctors pronounced her dead at the hospital at 1:47 a.m. Police body camera footage released earlier this week shows one of the officers calling Massey a “slut” and “crazy.”

Officer Grayson has been fired from the police force and faces five charges, including three counts of first-degree murder. The 30-year-old has pleaded not guilty, according to CNN.
