Sony Open 2023 fantasy golf picks, tips, standings: Top golf expert says fadeki Matsuyama at Waialae CC

Just four days after the stars of the PGA Tour wrapped up a thrilling event in Maui, a slightly less impressive full course will tee off at the 2023 Sony Open on Thursday. The 2023 Sony Open field has 144 players including seven of the top 25 in the world, including Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama and Tom Kim. They’ll face a much different test on the shorter Waialae Country Club course in Honolulu, but low scores shouldn’t be an issue there. This is going to be another picture-perfect week in the Hawaiian Islands, so a score of 20 or less is on the cards. Matsuyama won last year, beating Russell Henley 23 under 23 with a furious comeback before scoring on the first playoff hole.

Kim (10-1) and Sungjae Im (12-1) are favorites in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest Sony Open 2023 odds. They were followed by Matsuyama (15-1), Spieth (16-1) and Brian Harman (16-1). Henley (22-1) is also among eight players with a score lower than 30-1 at the 2023 Sony Open. Kim is priced at $10,500 in the DraftKings Fantasy rankings, while Im, Matsuyama and Spieth all have the least. 10,000 USD.

Spieth is one of the biggest names in the field, but is he worth his $10,000 price tag to get you into his 2023 Sony Open Fantasy golf picks? Would a player like Corey Conners ($9,600) or Keegan Bradley ($9,300) give you the same results and more flexibility to set up your team to win? Before you make any Fantasy golf ratings or bet on the 2023 Sony Open, you need to see golf predictions in Fantasy and lineups advice from SportsLine fantasy sports expert Jim Holliman.

Holliman has been a writer and editor for almost 25 years and has been playing and following the game for over three decades. The Florida writer knows what it takes to win the PGA Tour and how the player’s games fit the courses.

The golf expert who nailed the Tour Championship, says Rory McIlroy was the only player capable of covering a six-hole loss to get past Scottie Scheffler. “He’s got a lot of base to make up for, but he’s the most all-round player in the field, so if anyone can do it, so can he,” Holliman said. The Northern Irishman was actually down 10 points after two holes on Sunday but stormed out to claim the title.

Holliman also has Patrick Cantlay (14-1) among his best bets at the BMW Championship, trailing Will Zalatoris (28-1) at St. Jude and won the Wyndham Championship, with Kim (35-1) among his picks. Holliman said of Kim: “It was a matter of when (not if) he got his first PGA Tour. It turned out to be in Sedgefield, where Kim won by five strokes.

This specialist also has a knack for finding long shots. At St. Jude, when many of the top stars went home early, Chez Reavie had a long shot 200-1 at the weekend. At the 3M Open, the expert ranked Emiliano Grillo (50-1) as the opponent before the Argentine finished with a T-2 position. And against the PGA, he touted Cameron Young (65-1) before finishing in T-3. Anyone who has followed Holliman’s prediction has a chance to play their golf.

Now, Holliman has ranked his top golfers for the 2023 Sony Open and you’ll really want to see what he has to say. You can only see his Fantasy golf rankings and Sony Open picks at SportsLine.

2023 Sony Open Fantasy golf expert chooses

One thing Holliman is sure of this week is that Kim will hit the mark. “There is good reason for the high price,” said the expert, “but he will be worth it.” His two wins in his first 15 PGA Tour events are just the continuation of a dominant career that has included 11 appearances in various tournaments around the world. “The kid knows how to win,” said Holliman, and he was one of the most accurate dribblers on the tour. Kim placed sixth on the tour in both driving accuracy and green regulation. Waialae rewards accuracy and ball placement, so this should be a perfect match.

In the opposite direction, Holliman does not see many opportunities for Matsuyama to repeat his feat, so he is tarnishing the defending champion. The Japanese star has had his best putting week of the season so far – and third best in steering accuracy – but still needs a spectacular comeback to win. This is his first time finishing in the top 10 after nine attempts at Waialae. He doesn’t usually hit straight enough to regularly compete in a course like this. The 2021 Masters champion is 142nd in shots from tee and 110th as we approach this season, and his shot has never been a strength. You can see who else is coming back this week at SportsLine.
