Sony informs developers to release 2-hour free game trial for PlayStation Plus Deluxe: Report

Sony is said to have asked developers to create a timed free trial of their game for the upcoming top tier of a new subscription plan, PlayStation Plus Premium (PlayStation Plus Deluxe in India). These free trials are supposed to last at least two hours. This policy is expected to apply only to games with a wholesale price above $34 (about Rs 2,600). Furthermore, developers are expected to release free game trials only for upcoming titles. Released games and PlayStation VR titles are expected to be exempt from this new policy.

The report from Game Developers suggests that developers will have up to three months to release these betas from the launch date of their game on PlayStation Shop. They will have to maintain these free trials for at least 12 months for PlayStation Plus Deluxe and Premium users. Sony is said to be even open to custom game demos. Developers are said to still be allowed to release free games over the weekend and other promotional offers outside of the PlayStation Plus Deluxe / Premium tier.

Ethan Gack from Kotaku suggest that these free game trials could be developed by the PlayStation Store team, which could prevent relatively smaller studios from taking on the extra work. However, concerns remain about these time-long trials negatively impacting game sales. In addition, Sony is said to not be providing any extra privileges to developers when releasing these free trials.

The all-new PlayStation Plus game subscription service is available confirmed will arrive in India on June 22. The three-tier service is split into PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Deluxe in India. Globally, regions that support cloud streaming will get the slightly expensive PS Plus Premium as the top subscription tier, instead of PS Plus Deluxe.
