Sony Honda Mobility unveils Afeela EV prototype at CES

Three years after appearing its first concept car, Sony, with partner Hondarevealed it tram branding and a first model preview concept. sony Honda’s motobike Mobility (SHM), the company founded by the automotive and electronics giants, will create a brand called Afeela to sell its electric cars.

The car model, which goes by no other name than the Afeela brand, looks quite different from the original Sony concepts, aside from being a sedan-like car with a satin gray paint job. The shape is extremely clean and minimal, with as few folds, curves and lines as possible. The front and rear light clusters are reduced to the basic bar form. It all looks extremely aerodynamic as well. The whole incident is reminiscent of a Hyundai Ioniq 6 if you simplify it further. And on the subject of hyundaiAfeela has a length and width similar to the Korean sedan.

However, the exterior has some unique features. Most notable is the “Media Bar” in front between the actual headlight units. It is a screen that can display all kinds of information and even be personalized. Although we suspect government regulators can limit how customizable that panel is. Of course, it can also provide charging information and potentially even pedestrian information, especially since this vehicle has some autonomy.

The interior is as minimalist as the exterior, but with a range of full-width screens more popular than ever, including screens for the rearview mirror. The rear seats also have their own screens. Sony insists on providing all kinds of entertainment for passengers. It didn’t mention anything about install PlayStation in carbut it did mention that it partnered with Epic Games to develop entertainment options.

Sony also went on to talk about some aspects of the car technology and features. The vehicle has 45 cameras and sensors, all from Sony for use with vehicle safety systems being developed by Honda. It is working with Qualcomm to make computer chips for cars. Sony claims the car will have Level 3 autonomous driving in some situations, although that will require the driver’s attention in some conditions, mainly urban driving. Level 2 driver assistance will be available in those situations.

No details about the battery or the engines were given. However, the car uses all-wheel drive and we can imagine that it uses the common dual-engine layout, one at each end. Looking at the specs, the car has a wider rear tire, so we bet the rear has a larger engine. The front end uses a double wishbone suspension and the rear has an independent multi-link setup.

The Afeela will be sold primarily online. Pre-orders for the production model, which will again be based on this prototype, will begin in the first half of 2025, with orders to be finalized by the end of the year. The first deliveries to North American buyers will take place in 2026. The vehicles will be manufactured at a Honda facility in North America.
