Solar canopy, customer lounge, valet service

Electrify America is looking to make its charging experience more premium, with more complicated installations than today’s stand-alone parking chargers.

The Volkswagen Group-funded charging network on Thursday announced plans for a small number of “showroom stations” with up to 20 DC fast chargers, along with amenities like customer lounges and energy curtains. solar panels to protect customers from the sun and bad weather, vehicle display and security cameras plus additional lighting for added safety.

Electrify America said in a press release that some sites may also offer curbside delivery and valet charging. The accompanying image is more in line with what recent designers think charging station of the future looks like and is a complete contrast to today’s average Electrify America station.

America’s electrification initial mapping much of its network at Walmart stores — where they usually don’t have awnings, often without any other services (like dining) nearby.

Electrify America plans to preview these ideas in 2022 and 2023 at “top” charging locations in Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Francisco and Beverly Hills, California, as well as New York’s Manhattan and Brooklyn boroughs. The company says it already has flagship sites in Baker, California, and Santa Clara, California.

Electrify America also says it is in the process of adding solar awnings at 100 charging points, for a total of between 400 and 500 individual chargers. The energy harvested from these awnings can help power chargers, reducing dependence on grid electricity. On a related note, Electrify America says it is also adding 150 battery energy storage systems to harness excess solar energy and help balance the grid.

The company previously said it had a plan double its charging network by 2025. This happened as states began sending out plans for a federal EV charging network.

While Electrify America aims to be more upscale in urban and suburban markets, convenience stores have begun bring chargers to rural America. But the rechargeable industry is focused on the idea that gas station is not a good model for EV charging.
