Software prompts another Chevy Bolt EV battery recall due to fires

  • 72 Bolt EV and EUV models do not have low battery warning software
  • Those models need to return to the dealer to have the software installed.
  • Affected owners should park their vehicles outside and not charge them past 90%.

A small number of Chevrolet Bolt EVs that were recalled due to battery fire risks have been recalled again for the same reason.

While this is not a new issue, a proactive review of GM service records shows that some vehicles did not complete the installation of diagnostic software required by the recall.

That means a new round of recalls (and dealer service) for 66 different 2020-2022 Bolt EV hatchbacks and six different 2022 Bolt EUVs. In those specific vehicles, GM says, “advanced The diagnostic software may have been installed incorrectly. and failed to detect faulty battery modules, which could lead to battery fires.”

While GM is not aware of any incidents related to this software issue, the automaker has internally determined that in some cases its service software system will allow technicians to process a vehicle warranty claim without installing the entire software, the company explains in the recall paperwork.

The advice for affected drivers sounds a lot like when GM rolled out such software for the Bolt EV when it was first affected by that battery recall: Set a target charge level of 90%; avoid letting the battery drain when the remaining range is below 70 miles; park outside after charging; and Do not charge the car overnight indoors.

Owners who are fortunate enough to bring their vehicles in for re-service will be notified starting around August 5, 2024. In the meantime, Bolt EV owners can contact 833-382-4389 with any questions.

This is a very, very small subset of GM’s massive 2021 battery recall effort, which eventually encompassed the entire 140,000 Bolt EV and Bolt EUV models in North America. While this recall affects later model years, many owners of 2017-2019 Bolt EVs have received new battery packs that give them a longer driving range than they did originally.

The Bolt EV discontinued in December 2023But as GM reported last week, it remains Chevy’s best-selling electric car in the first half of 2024, with the Blazer EV unlikely to make it through that period. GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed earlier this year that when it returns in late 2025, 2026 Chevy Bolt Electric Car will be the most affordable electric car in the United States.
