Sky News hosts first Tory leadership debate | Political news

Sky News has announced that it will host its first televised debate with Tory leadership candidates competing to replace Boris Johnson.

The live debate is scheduled for July 18 and will be chaired by Kay Burley.

The candidates, gathered at the Sky News studio in West London, will face questions from a virtual studio audience.

John Ryley, Sky News Director, said: “There has never been a more important time to restore voter confidence in the prime minister’s office.

“This live televised debate on Sky News gives candidates the chance to reconnect with millions by debating the big issues facing Britain.

“It offers a unique opportunity to re-engage a disillusioned voter.”

So far, 11 candidates have announced bids for the Tory leadership – and for No. 10.

They are:

  • Kemi Badenoch, former equality minister
  • Suella Braverman, Attorney General
  • Rehman Chishti, a foreign minister
  • Jeremy Hunt, former secretary of state
  • Sajid Javid, former medical secretary
  • Penny Mordaunt, Secretary of International Trade
  • Grant Shapps, secretary of transportation
  • Rishi Sunak, former prime minister
  • Liz Truss, Secretary of State
  • Tom Tugendhat, chairman of the Commons foreign affairs selection committee
  • Nadhim Zahawi, the new prime minister

Mr Zahawi has told Sky News he will join the debate.

On Sunday, the new prime minister faces scrutiny of his tax affairs.

He told Sky News that he “obviously smeared” against allegations that a “flag” was raised by officials before he was appointed prime minister on Tuesday – as reported in The Observer.

The debate will be broadcast live and free on Sky News channel 501, on Sky News digital channels, streamed on YouTube and televised live to our IRN Commercial Radio partners.
