Singapore to ease Covid measures; drop mandated outdoor mask

SINGAPORE – Singapore will relax Covid restrictions including outdoor mask regulations from March 29, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced in a speech on Thursday.

The limit on social gatherings will be doubled from five to 10, Lee said, more employees can return to the office and capacity limits for large events will be increased. Lee said.

Masks are still needed indoors, and a safe distance of 1m between groups is still required in the mask off setting.

The peak of the omicron wave in Singapore seems to have passed. Daily new cases stood at 8,940 on Wednesday, down from a record 26,032 on February 22.

As of Tuesday, 92% of the population had received two shots under the national immunization program, while 71% had received a booster shot.

The majority of people infected in Singapore have mild or no symptoms. About 0.3% needed supplemental oxygen in the past 28 days, and 0.04% were in the intensive care unit.
