That’s how you do it! Simone Biles has another achievement to add to her long list! Today, the 25-year-old gymnast becomes the youngest person to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President Biden’s speech honoring Simone said, “When we saw her compete, we saw unmatched strength and determination, grace and audacity – a pioneer and a role model.”
After the ceremony, Simone posted on her Instagram about receiving the medal, writing,
“I am honored and grateful to be recognized by President Biden as the recipient of this prestigious award. I still have no words. I’m shocked!”
The Olympic athlete’s fiancé, Jonathan Owens, also congratulated his woman on being honored on the ‘gram’.
he wrote,
“Words cannot explain how proud I am of you. What a surreal experience it is to see you receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom and be the youngest person ever to receive it! “
Olympic gymnasts are not the only ones to receive this medal. She was among 17 others, including American soccer player Megan Rapinoe. Khizr Khan, the father of a fallen Muslim army captain, and Sandra Lindsay, a nurse in New York, were among the first in the country to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Legendary actor Denzel Washington was also honored.
Unfortunately, Denzel was unable to attend the ceremony after contracting COVID-19. According to People, a rep for the actor said, “Denzel has tested positive for COVID, and as such he regrets not being able to attend the Medal of Freedom ceremony.” However, the agent assured him that he was feeling fine and would be honored at a later date. During the ceremony, President Biden shared remarks about the actor who called him “a man who can’t be here today but wants to be”.
